Along with Megan, I'm also interested in what younger readers like and enjoy that is scary.

But I was hoping also to open the discussion up to scary picture books. I'm awaiting Neil Gaiman's new version of "Hansel and Gretel" with great anticipation. And I have to say that I found Lemony Snicket's "The Dark" to be a real letdown (the page of explanation killed all suspense). But I know others would disagree.

There is a growing body of research (renewed interest in the past 10 years) about the value of fairy tales for young children, in that they help kids face their fears and grow in resilience. It started with Bruno Bettelheim back in the 70s and is now creating discussion again. So I'm very interested in your experiences with 5-8 year olds and scary tales, especially but not limited to fairy tales. Regards, Sherryl Clark Author and PhD student Melbourne, Australia
