I am not sure why some people like scary stories because that is not my cup of tea. I do appreciate the ability of authors to send shivers up my spine, but I generally don't seek out the scary stuff. I was impressed with Libba Bray's The Diviners and Rick Yancey's Monstrumologist in particular. I read those two because they were part of a reading challenge or I wouldn't have picked them up otherwise. I get the creeps just thinking about them.
In my elementary school library, the most popular scary and/or macabre middle grade stories are:
Adam Gidwitz series starting with A Tale Dark and Grimm Alvin Schwartz's Scary Stories books Goosebumps (in all their many forms including graphic novels) The American Chillers series by Johnathan Rand Skeleton Man by Joseph Bruchac Skeleton Creek by Patrick Carmen Mary Downing Hahn's books
Some of the non-fiction they go after:
The Vampire Hunter's Guide Spooky Cemeteries Cursed Grounds Famous Ghosts
They will actually check out anything fiction or non-fiction about ghosts, vampires, or zombies.
My younger students also enjoy:
Goodnight Goon My Teacher is a Vampire Scaredy Squirrel at Night Can You Make a Scary Face? The Dark at the Top of the Stairs Big, Bad and a Little Bit Scary: Poems that Bite Back Wolf's Coming Ghost's Hour, Spook's Hour Zombie in Love Scooby-Doo books A Ghost Story by Bill Martin Jr.
Sorry for the lengthy email. Perhaps I like scary books more than I realize.
