We welcome her, and thank her for the marvelous insight she gave us into creating the visual world of "Little Roja":

I was struck as I looked through the images and read Susan's comments by how important it was for her to translate the comfort and security she finds in the natural world into Little Roja's world. And when I look at the book I'm struck by the black-eyed Susan's (I think I called them sunflowers yesterday) in particular, watching everything unfold. One of my favorite illustrations is the one in which Little Roja is looking into her abuela's window and sees the wolf inside. She is carrying a bunch of the flowers, they look--alarmed, angry? Both I think, they are rigid and fierce for sure, and look ready to defend Little Roja and her grandma

You talk in your notes about the magpies quite a bit, Susan. Was there specific reason you chose this particular kind of flower? (Apologies if I misidentified it.)
