There's a wonderful essay in Jill May's _Children's Literature & Critical Theory_; the piece is titled "A Children's Literature Curriculum for Preschool Children," and was written by Dana Hershey, apparently as a class paper. It describes a five-week program Hershey used with nine children (ages 4 and 5), walking them through literary concepts like a journey (home-away-home in picture book terms) and protagonist/antagonist coupled with a careful study of illustrations and patterns in picture books. She encourages exploration of illustrations (and language) by reading different versions of the same folktale, books with similar plot structures, and activities that promote comparisons across books as well as art projects that build on the concept of journeys.
