Megan, thanks for your wonderfully thoughtful and detailed response. It really helps me understand what we mean by visual literacy so much more deeply.
I appreciate what you say allowing kids to make meaning on their own terms. I've learned the value of doing in book discussions with older children and teens because it helps me understand how readers can take different meanings from the same text, often based on their life experience. But I hadn't really thought about how that could be applied to children viewing pictures. So thanks for that (and the Chris Raschka quote.)
