Visual language and comics

There's some very exciting research going on regarding how people read comics. Turns out it's just the opposite of comics being 'junk food' - they stimulate the brain by using both words and pictures

Neil Cohn has written about how we read comics the way we read sentences: http://comicsbeat.com/scientist-our-brains-read-comics-as-sentences/

His Visual Language website it pretty fun too! http://www.visuallanguagelab.com/

As a writer, I'm thrilled by kids' visual literacy - take for example, how quickly kids take to manga, and learn how it works - *with little or no formal instruction.* I also love how kids quickly jump in and make visual mediums (comics, manga, online visual sharing etc.) their own.
