Defining Visual Literacy

Thanks to Michael and Megan for getting us started. I'll just add that when I saw Megan Lambert present on her work sharing picture books with children during an Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC) preconference several years ago, it made me want to go home and immediately find a group of kids to share picture books with, it was that inspiring and exciting to see.

In the meantime, it occured to me that it might be helpful if we spend some time talking about what we mean by the term "visual literacy."

I am not an expert in any way, but one of the things "visual literacy" makes me think of is wanting kids to understand the power of images. I mentioned in my opening post the power of a a line, or a series of lines. I can think of some of the simplest illustrations visually can often showcase this--the changing moods of Elephant and Piggie or the Pigeon in Mo Willems's books, for example, is often conveyed through a few lines. The joyful exuberance and deep sadness of Daisy in Chris Raschka's "A Ball for Daisy" is captured in large part through line
(although color in that book is also powerful).

Chip Kidd's "Go: A Kid's Guide to Graphic Design" is deconstructs what is happening with images we see all the time. But as Megan's approach shows, even young children can talk about what is happening visually in picture books and by extension other things they see.

What do you know or think about when you hear the term "visual literacy." How does it connect for you back to picture books?
