My alma mater's Center for Contemporary Arab Studies has a useful list of reasonably contemporary children's books dealing with Islam and the Arab world. Source: I can't get a URL address but if you google "Selected Resources on the Middle East and Islam Compiled by the Center for Contemporary Arab Studies, Georgetown University" it will be the first item returned.
