Having had the pleasure of introducing Rukhsana Khan at the "Muslim Journeys" conference in Madison, Wisconsin, this past Saturday, I could say quite a bit here! But instead I'll recommend highly that you go to her website (www.rukhsanakhan.com), which includes not only information about her background and her books, but teacher-guides, video book talks, and
"tutorials" in which she provides helpful insights for teachers who are using her books in class.

Rukhsana was born in Pakistan but has lived in Canada since the age of three, when her father moved the family there. She has had--and continues to have--a lively career as a writer, storyteller, much-traveled speaker, and sought-after interview subject. Her books range from picture books about chickens, refugees, and lollipops (BIG RED LOLLIPOP is included in the New York Public Library's list of "100 Great Books in the last 100 Years"), to novels about the challenges a Pakistani teenager faces in fitting in at school, and about the poor treatment--and personal strength--of Afghan girls. And much more.

If you've had a chance to read her latest picture book, KING FOR A DAY
(with illustrations by Christiane Kromer), you may already have some questions, for instance about how she came to write this story, and what it tells us about Pakistani culture--and confronting adversity.
. Rukhsana, we're so pleased to welcome you to this discussion list. I know you'll give us a lot to think about. (It's my understanding that you're willing to respond to questions and comments as they come up.)

Looking forward to this discussion--
