Elisa, great topic and comments.  I don't know about 1995, but I was in Cairo in 2006 and no camel could have survived the downtown. I'm from Chicago and thought I understood traffic. I quickly learned I didn't. And I will forever remain amazed at the antics of the motorcyclists weaving through the streets and the fact that we saw zero accidents.

Anyway, I happen to be in the middle of teaching a class full of writers about writing with diversity and we are on the topic of research and accuracy and the problems with stereotypes and caricatures of people.  I'm trying to impress on them the value of staying as close to reality as possible. Would you mind if I shared parts of your letter with the class? it might drive the point home to hear this from a reader and not just their instructor.
