This has been a great discussion!
I just wanted to quickly mention N.H. Senzai's two novels set in the San Francisco Bay Area: Shooting Kabul (S&S, 2010) and Saving Kabul Corner (S&S, 2014). Both novels features characters who emigrated from Afghanistan to Fremont, California, and contain a good amount of distinctive cultural elements. The main characters are "tweens" dealing with living in two cultures, and aspects of their Muslim faith are naturally integrated into the story. For example, in Saving Kabul Corner, the family owns a specialty foods store, with a counter for Halal meat.
Both Muslim children and their non-Muslim school mates can relate to these novels, and the novels can help Muslim children identify with a book character.
Thanks, Penny Peck
