Muslim and Muslim culture in books

I would be remiss if I didn't plug a Schwartz & Wade title here--DEEP IN THE SAHARA, written by Kelly Cunnane, who lived in Mauritania for a year; with paintings by the Iraqi illustrator, Hoda Hadadi. It tackles a controversial subject: a little girl wants to wear a malafa, the colorful cloth that some Muslim women in Mauritania wear to cover their clothing and heads when they are in public.

At first I was hesitant to sign the manuscript up, completely convinced that wearing a veil is repressive to women, end of discussion. But I came to believe that presenting another point-of-view and another culture trumped this, especially when there are so many misunderstandings about Muslims in the US. Kelly and Hoda's story is perfect for young children, and I'm proud to have published it.

An adult book that will have appeal to teens is Michael Muhammad Knight's, The Taqwacores. Set in a Muslim punk house in Buffalo, this book features Sufis, Sunnis, Shi'as, and more trying to figure out the place their faith has in a world that also has sex, drugs, and punk music. This book was originally self published (photocopied and spiral bound). The title refers to taqwa, an Arabic term for divine consciousness. This book has been called the Catcher in the Rye for young Muslims. It does do a decent job of sharing that universal struggle between religion and popular culture while explaining many of the religious practices of Muslims. Well worth finding and reading. There is also an audio version available and a poorly reviewed low budget movie. http://www.nytimes.com/2008/12/23/us/23muslim.html
