I am quite delighted to see this discussion of books about Islam for children and young adults - especially modern topics!

I recommend two books by Hena Khan (www.henakhan.com): Night of the Moon, about the month of Ramadan from the point of view of a 7-year old Pakistani American; and Golden Domes and Silver Lanterns, a book of colors based on aspects of Islamic culture.

Another good guide is the Arab American Book Award
(http://www.arabamericanmuseum.org/2014.book.award.winners) many, though not all, deal with Muslims or Islamic countries and culture. Naomi Shihad Nye has won this award and is in fact featured in the small but lovely Arab American National Museum in Dearborn, MI. The 2014 Arab American Book Award winner is A Kid=92s Guide to Arab American History by Yvonne Wakim Dennis and Maha Addasi; honorable mention is The Arab World Thought of it: Inventions, Innovations and Amazing Facts by Saima S. Hussain.

Some winners of the Children=92s Africana Book Award
(http://africaaccessreview.org/africana-awards/) also deal with Muslim countries and culture. Books winning either of these awards have already been vetted by librarians and subject matter experts for both accuracy and sensitivity.
