Seemi's point about reading texts against each other is the way I teach it, too. Satrapi pairs nicely with excerpts from Azar Nafisi's Reading Lolita in Tehran, a book which was widely celebrated upon its publication, but has also received considerable consideration for its pro-West and (neo)conservative biases.
To paraphrase Gerald Graff, teach the conflicts.
Best wishes, Pete

As a book it was an extraordinary contribution. But as we think about a book as a window into the life of a certain culture or society it becomes problematic. I believe in providing counter narratives in my literature classes so I either provide a text set about a certain culture or ask students to read paired books that show contrasting view points or if that is not possible then I encourage research over the Internet or other books and articles etc. that provide that certain oppositional view that encourages deeper thinking and understanding.
