I love Persepolis, too, but it offers a pretty damning portrait of Islamic fundamentalism in Iran that some readers may confuse for a condemnation of Muslim culture. I try to be careful of that when I teach it to college students.

While it wasn't published for young adults (although it certainly could have been), a book that had an enormous impact on me was "Persepolis" by Marjane Satrapi. It gave me greater insight into life in Iran before and after the Islamic Revolution than any news report ever could have, and showed me how narrow and one-sided those reports had been. And one of the things I appreciated most about Persepolis was the humor. I count it as one of my favorite books of all time, and highly recommend it to anyone who hasn't read it.

how about suggesting some good books about the Muslim world? Can you recommend a book that you feel gives a positive and accurate view of a Muslim society? Preferably contemporary, although books that present the past in a way that helps appreciation of another, perhaps traditional, culture and/or better understanding of the present, would also be valuable.
