CCBC-Net Discussion in August

In August on CCBC-Net we'll be discussing Muslims and Muslim Culture in Books for Children and Young Adults. This topic was suggested earlier in the year by Elsa Marston when we were in the midst of discussing trends in multicultural literature for children. Since this has been a hot topic for the past 10-15 years, and there has been a growing body of literature on the subject during that time, we agreed with Elsa that this would make a perfect topic for a CCBC-Net discussion. And we are in the midst of packing the CCBC for a move, so we've invited Elsa to facilitate the discussion, and she has generously agreed to do so. We'll still be checking in -- it may just not be as often as we normally do.

We won't begin the discussion till mid-week so that we can have a few more days of open announcement time, but, in the meantime, if you want to seek out this month's books to read in advance, they are:

"King for a Day" by Rukshana Khan (Lee and Low, 2013)

"If You Could Be Mine" by Sara Farizan (Algonquin, 2013)

We'll be discussing these books the last two weeks of August. We have confirmed that Rukhsana Khan will be joining the discussion then, and we hope that Sara Farizan will also be able to join us.

On a related subject, there is still time to register for an upcoming conference in Madison, WI, on Saturday August 16, called "Muslim Journeys." This day-long conference is aimed at teachers, librarians, and others with an interest in literature for children and teens. There is a great line-up of speakers (authors Ali Alalou, Rukhsana Khan, and N. H. Senzai, and Iranian-American journalist Saideh Jamshidi). The $75 registration fee ($35 for students) includes lunch, and a free book by one of the speakers. The deadline for registration is Wednesday, August 6. More information is available here: http://wioc.wisc.edu/events/childlit/index.html

I've attended the conferences put on by the Wisconsin International Outreach Consortium in the past, and they have been excellent. That's why I'm taking time out of my busy schedule of packing for the CCBC move to attend this year's conference. Elsa Marston will be there, too. If you live near Madison, please join us!

Cheers, KT
