bullying in Yaqui Delgado

I enjoyed Yaqui Delgado Wants to Kick Your Ass for so many reasons. One of the things that stood out to me most was how realistic it is in its exploration of bullying. I think so often, we offer easy solutions to young people who face bullies: just stand up for yourself, just ignore it, just tell an adult. These are the solutions often presented in the media and in literature, but in reality, it is so much more complicated than that. I wasn't expecting the violence to escalate the way that it did, or for Piddy to make the decisions she made, because I had never before read a young adult novel that so bravely addresses the realities of bullying and simultaneously conveys pain and hope. It seems to me that to write a story like this would require bravery and a willingness to take risks. Meg, I wonder if you felt like you were taking any risks while writing this story. Thank you so much for joining us this week!
