Hi, Claudia. Have a fabulous time at the SCBWI panel and feel free to share the link below, if it's useful.
I created and have been maintaining a diversity database for the past five years. There are 1,000+ books in it, all meeting these two criteria:
1) The main character is a person of color, and
2) The story is NOT driven by race.
There are so many wonderful, worthy books about race and social issues around race, but I wanted a database of (for want of a better word,
"mainstream") books -- fantasies, mysteries, everyday adventures, friendship stories, etc. -- where kids could see themselves and others reflected in our world full of color.
(Note: Identity is of course key to the development of the self, and themes of self-expression and identity that involve living in a culture where you are not the dominant race/ethnicity/culture can definitely be part of a story in this database, but they cannot be the primary themes/engines of the story.)
The database can be found (and sorted by various age and genre tags) at:
www.librarything.com/catalog/shelftalker
Enjoy SCBWI!
Cheers, Elizabeth
