Thank you Elsa and Helen for your posts. I am glad the older women (Lila, Ma, the ladies at the salon) resonated with you. It’s easy to kill off the adults or make them criminally absent or stupid in YA lit. But that doesn’t really reflect the reality of kid’s lives. Sure, they will feel that many adults are out of touch or ineffective, but I also see that they have deep relationships with special teachers, aunts, uncles, older cousins, etc. I wanted Piddy to have a network of women who could provide her with emotional support in one way or another, each offering something unique. Seriously, wouldn’t you have loved to have a Lila in your life? The plunger handle as weapon sealed her in my heart forever!
