These two fine books make such an interesting contrast: the interwoven fantasy and realism of *Charm and Strange, *and *Yaqui Delgado *with a realism that makes you almost feel the city concrete under your feet--and the painful bruises Piddy gets from being knocked around on that concrete!
As I read, I speculated about how the relationship between Piddy and Yaqui would work out--whether they would find a modus vivendi, or even mutual sympathy--the way we often like books for young people to resolve conflict.
I liked the way Meg Medina handled it, and I wonder whether she considered other possible ways for this relationship to end.
Yaqui is a fascinating character, with a lot of power but riddled with her own unhappiness. I think this girl and her complex of miseries will stay with Piddy for a long time, even if they never meet again..
Thanks to Helen for the insightful comments about Joey. I agree. Meg Medina handled that relationship convincingly, too.
And I loved the older women in Piddy's life, the irritation and the solid grounding that they provide in different ways (if I may stretch the
"concrete" metaphor a little farther!)
