We want to thank Meg Medina for joining us beginning today to take questions about "Yaqui Delgado."
Welcome, Meg!
And thanks to Ed Sullivan for launching the q-and-a.
I'm curious, Meg, to what extent you knew from the outset (or if you knew from the outset) the degree to which Piddy would spiral. It is a deeply honest account of what the psychological (and physical) impact of bullying can be, a place it isn't easy but is necessary to go, and one of the things that makes the book so fine.
I also was glad Helen brought up Joey. I agree--introducing his story could have easily gone wrong but didn't, because his story, too, is true. Here Piddy and Joey are in the midst of this busy, bustling world, struggling. They find solace together, but each needs to make a decision for themself that will change the course of their individual lives, and that is one of the things that I appreciate about how that storyline was handled.
Was Joey a character you envisioned from the outset, or did he tap you on the shoulder as you wrote and say, "Excuse me."
