I love Joey, and the relationship between him and Piddy. So many ways this could have gone wrong in the telling. A mis-step into pity for him or self-pity on Piddy's part, or contempt for his parents, or a brutality in the sexual encounters between them. Any one of these things could have been seen as realistic, plausible, but would have shifted the narrative focus and marred the central strength and beauty of the characters as well as the story. That scene where Piddy apologizes for her humiliation and Joey flares up and tells her never to do that-- so true to each of them, who we know them to be by then. And the kittens, not sweet cuddly pets, but hungry- for -life creatures in their own right. Really well done. Helen Frost
