Thank you very much, Stephanie, for your thoughtful response to my question, which does help me to understand better why the revelation of the Darkest Secret was not more "prepared for." I appreciate your--in a sense--walking me through this!
Incidentally, just recently I read another very impressive "monster within" novel, *A Monster Calls *by Patrick Ness, about a young boy whose mother is dying. .I was awed but terrified..... not my kind of book, I think, though I'm glad to have read it. And my son, who teaches high school
(humanities), responded very positively to it.
Thanks again- and for your contributions to serious literature.
