Like Hannah, I did have an idea of where it was going; actually from pretty early on I found definitely clues in the text that pointed to what Win's father had done, and later on what Win himself had done. In fact, the twists of Charm & Strange worked very well for me, where some other YA books with big reveals haven't. And it helps, I suppose, that Win's psychological state contributes to his metaphorical way of viewing his past, while it also hides the truth from the readers. (That is, I like my unreliable narrators to have some reason for their unreliability.)

(Full disclosure: I was on the Cybils panel that named this one of the YA Fiction finalists last year.)
