Some thoughts on realistic fiction and upcoming NCTE

Hi everyone -

Two quick notes:

First, I think that young adults appreciate realistic fiction if it presents the unvarnished truth, always a messy proposition. This is where librarians will almost certainly need to defend the right to read. YA of this type means at times watching teen characters think and do the most heartbreaking things. It also means books without caricature, e.g. 100 per cent mean-kids or dumb adults, for example. Theirs is a world populated by complex people and issues that call forth the best and worst in all of them. My sense is that teen readers welcome books that name their experience and invite them to think. To me, the draw of writing and reading realistic YA is that if offers our best chance to help young people pause and reflect about who they are – and who they aspire to be – against the backdrop of their families, schools, and community.

I also wanted to let fans of realistic YA fiction know of an upcoming panel at this year’s NCTE conference in Washington DC (November). Here is the blurb for the accepted proposal. I think we present on Sunday, Nov 23:

Award winning authors, Chris Crutcher (Stotan, Running Loose, Athletic Shorts), Rich Wallace (Wrestling Sturbridge, One Good Punch, Losing is Not an Option), Sandra Neil Wallace (Muckers), Bill Konigsberg (Out of the Pocket, Openly Straight), and Meg Medina (Yaqui Delgado Wants to Kick Your Ass) discuss how they create realistic school settings, believable characters, and conflicts that resonate with teenagers without the help of vampires, zombies, fairies, space ships, time travel or aliens.

Happy reading and happy SUMMER!
