I was shocked and saddened to hear about Walter. I feel like a bright light has gone out.
I first met him when we served together as judges for the PEN/Phyllis Naylor Fellowship. Later I hosted him several times on PEN panels. He was unfailingly generous, compassionate, and fiercely committed to inspiring young people, especially African-American boys. In doing so, he became an inspiration to all of us. I will miss him.
Fatima Shaik has posted a beautiful tribute on the PEN blog at http://www.pen.org/blog/tribute-walter-dean-myers-august-12-1937-july-1-2014
There's also a link there to an interview with Walter that Amy Nathan did in 2012, called "Reading is Not Optional."
Best, Susanna
