Hi Uma
Thanks for the warm words. I didn't read your email until after I made my last response. In it, I think I addressed some of what you ask. I don't have a process really. I just go where the research takes me. I really believe it's all in the research: voice, structure, the images. When I'm immersed in a subject, really surrendered to it, I find I have very good hunches and stumble upon a lot of things.
As for finding right images and clearing permissions by now I have a pretty good sense of who charges a lot for use and who does not. I don't think I've ever had to research rights because almost always I secured an image and permission to use it from a library, historical society, or photo service.
Now most all places have their use/permissions fees online.
A time or two I've used artwork that required my getting permission from the artist. We knew each other and so there wasn't a lot of rigmarole.
Has this helped? If not, write me again!
