Thanks for that thorough and insightful response to my questions.
I, too, was surpised by how much effort Lincoln put into colonization. That was a huge revelation to me.
Regarding the grapevine: thank you for talking about that. Of course not everything is thoroughly documented, but does that make it untrue? Yes, we must rely on our human-ness to make sense of history, and that can mean making sense of what is not written down as well as what is.
And of course this is particularly true of the history of peoples outside the dominant power structure, for many reasons, not the least of which is the fact that decisions about what was valuable to document were so often made by those within the dominant power structure. (Not to mention recorded history is as full of errors as the oral tradition is apt to be. )
