Tonya, thank you so much for your thoughtful reply to Megan and Emily's questions. You have given us a lot to think about and consider. I appreciate the image of Lincoln as a Sphinx, that he can be anything one wants him to be.

Your book is beautifully illustrated and designed, and I wonder if you would you please talk a little bit about this? How did you do your photo research, for example? One thing that struck me was the number of old photos and prints that had been colorized. Choosing so many like this must have been intentional -- am I right? Can you tell us about these choices?

One of the photos that really stuck out to me was the black-and-white photo near the end of Harriet Tubman, taken 50 years after the Emancipation Proclamation. She's sitting outside, covered in a knitted white shawl and a white blanket that make her look soft and angelic. But when you look closer you can see her gripping the arm of the chair, and her expression is one of dignity and determination. (The black blanket on the back of the chair behind her looks almost like there's someone behind her holding her shoulders, in the "invisible mother" tradition of the era.) It's an amazing photo, and it puts in my mind the opening words of the poem by Eloise Greenfield:

"Harriet Tubman didn't take no stuff Wasn't scared of nothing neither Didn't come in this world to be no slave And wasn't going to stay one either."

Thanks for including this photo at the end of your book. It speaks volumes.
