Emancipation Proclamation

This week we turn our attention to Tonya Bolden's book "Emancipation Proclamation: Lincoln and the Dawn of Liberty" (Abrams, 2013).
Tonya will be joining us mid-week to respond to questions. For now, let's get started talking about her book.
I will begin by saying the voice in this narrative struck me as unusual for a work of non-fiction, and also deeply affecting. As we think about point of view, I find this book fascinating. Here's an example:
“As we waited for all of America to repent—to repudiate slavery—we wept, we raged, we prayed. Over beatings and brandings and bullwhippings. Over the rapes. Over families fractured on auction blocks. And then there was all that stolen labor.”
Words like these establish a means for readers to connect the politics of the times about which she is writing to the human costs of slavery, and I say wow.
