RE: The Role of YALSA

I could not agree more with Marc Aronson's characterization of the YALSA's BBYA travesty as an "unforgivable abomination" and I, too, see YALSA's Excellence in Nonfiction Award as an opportunity to bring attention to nonfiction for older teens. However, in not having any official criteria identifying what constitutes "excellence in nonfiction," I would argue the award lacks legitimacy. The "we know it when see it" approach is difficult to take seriously.

I forgot to mention this in my long post -- perhaps for the best. One key to the High YA NF issue is YALSA -- which is, after all, ALA's organization devoted to serving YA readers. The destruction of Best Books for Young Adults and the decision to replace it with Best Fiction (eliminating all NF from consideration) was an unforgivable abomination -- opposed by leaders in the field who had served as chairs of BBYA. There is NO current list of NF for teen reading groups to consider, no NF in YA galley or Top Ten voting, no public discussion of YA NF at ALA conferences -- none.

On the other hand, the creation of the YALSA NF award creates an opportunity. I understand that The Hub may serve as a forum for discussing current YA NF online. YALSA members -- this is your organization, speak up.

As a simple starting place, I urge all of you who work with teenagers to consider your YA NF section -- or do you have one? How visible, how prominent is your YA NF? Is it shelved with adult? If so, do you know the surrounding titles? How can you guide a bright 15 year old interested in philosophy, math, neuroscience, string theory...but not fully ready for adult titles?

Marc Aronson
