Re: Biographies of Women

I've been seeing this "haven't been able to interest a publisher" far too often in this discussion. While most nonfiction (and historical fiction) sells steadily to schools and libraries and forms an essential part of the curriculum at all levels, it doesn't promise the blockbuster sales of a lot of popular fiction for children and teens.

One solution would seem to be self-publishing these worthwhile but relatively unprofitable works, but the trade reviewers that schools and libraries use will not consider self-published titles. Is there a way of helping experienced authors get their more specialized nonfiction out there in a way that teachers can use? A peer-reviewed collective of indie-published authors similar to the growing range of online academic journals? Reviewers (perhaps based in university outreach centers or state departments of education) who can evaluate and recommend these works to K-12 teachers?

Just throwing some ideas out there...

I’ve been working on a biography of an 18th-century female mathematician of Milan who was famous in her day but is relatively unknown now. However, I’ve had difficulty capturing her personality because none of her personal writings have been found. While I continue to explore ways to make her come alive for young readers, I’ve also written a young adult historical novel based on her and her younger sister, who was a musician and composer. I’d love to find a way to introduce these amazing women to today’s young readers, but I haven’t been able to interest a publisher in the project yet.
