Elsa, <i applaud your note and also echo the praise for Ellen Swallow Richards biography. Bravo for the many unsong, unwritten heroes. <here in <italy <i continue to think about the women during the renaissance and dark ages, hardly one written word that they existed. their voices and artistic expressions were not allowed. <i know of one historical biography, Dantes Daughter. Speaking of the need for biographies of women:
There's a brand new biography of Ellen Swallow Richards, a remarkable 19th-century pioneer in all kinds of scientific fields--chemistry, ecology, marine science, euthenics (NOT eugenics!), hygiene in crowded city conditions, etc. etc.. The author is Pamela C. Swallow (whom I met at a writing retreat recently). There are a couple of other biographies of Richards for young readers, but they're much earlier. This one--which is due for publication any day now--is probably suitable for high school and up. The author is related to Ellen Swallow Richards, and she makes her subject sound absolutely fascinating.
Now I'm wondering: how many biographies of women are about scientists, and about artists and pop celebrities . . . and how many about women who simply and quietly did their best to keep humanity going, which is what women do while men do big things that make them worthy of being the subject of biographies?
