Female Sports Biographies

Here is the problem I have regarding biographies for women, and I don't have an easy answer for it because it is far more than a publishing problem. My middle schoolers are required to read biographies for various class assignments, and every year I have multiple girls who want to read biographies about women who play (or played) sports .... specifically, whatever sport they themselves love. It might be softball, volleyball, field hockey, basketball ... you name it, they play it. Girls today, at least judging from my school, are as athletic as boys and love sports, and they want to read about female sports role models. The pickings are shockingly slim. I actively search for biographies written about female sports figures, and I'm guessing the ratio of books written about male sports figures to female sports figures for middle school readers is well over 100:1. Clearly, this is largely because there are just so few female sports "celebrities" past and present out there. But my girls would be happy to read about someone who isn't famous--just about someone who's succeeded on her own terms. I wish the publishers knew that!!!!
