While I know the Trade industry is driven by "numbers" I find it so sad that there are so few takers among the publishers that cater to the school and library market. From a college recruiting perspective - one of the largest indicators of success is whether a high school student can read and synthesize information from long informational texts. Because that is what will be required when they matriculate.
So I often ask students what they read independently and why. I don't tend to care if it is non-fiction or fiction, just has to be something they were passionate about and wasn't assigned by an adult.
Lacking a lot of options in the YA field, many of the most successful students who read nonfiction are gravitating to adult texts. But many of those students are also reading a lot of fiction as well.
Perhaps an untapped market opportunity for saavy publishers? Especially as CC standards push more informational texts as a goal?.........Christine
