RE: Nonfiction in book stores

I was in a Barnes & Noble in Knoxville recently so of course I had to check out what the children's and YA sections look like. In the children's room, science-related books were in one place and biography and social studies-related books in another. Not sure what the rationale is for that. There was a mix of picture book-length and chapter books but the selection is quite limited considering how much is published for children. As limited as the selection was, it looked abundant compared to what the YA section had. The majority of books there were self-help and entertainment, which I guess helps to reinforce the stereotype that all teenagers are narcissistic and shallow.

Thank you so much, Lee, for your thoughtful response. I so wish you had the time  to write those books in your head, and that you could make a living at it.

You specifically mentioned the school library market. In the early 1960s there was an infusion of money into school libraries, and the emphasis at the time was on purchasing  books of information, particularly science. That golden time has long since faded, and budgets for schools and for libraries continue to get slashed. Book stores, we hear, now make up a much larger part of the children's trade market, so my question is this: does children's nonfiction of any kind get stocked much in book stores? If not, why not? Adult nonfiction is certainly a mainstay in any book store I've ever been in.  I'd love to hear from any booksellers out there who care to weigh in on this.

Today, stories fill my journals and brain, ready for the hard work of composing and rewriting and marketing needed to be a successful author. Unfortunately, the economics of children's writing in the school library market cannot compete with my salary in the construction market.
