I notice both boys and girls reading nonfiction about equally.
However ... I do notice women valuing fiction over nonfiction when encouraging their kids to read. I have heard many mothers uttering the dreaded phrase "real books" when I am doing reader's advisory with their children. "This is fine, but you also have to check out a few *real books*" (aka novels, preferably classics). I'll occasionally hear it from a father, but it's more often the mothers who place this value judgment.
Regarding the scarcity of books on a favorite subject--over the years I have gotten in the habit of always saying "If you want more books on this topic, let me know and I can place some on hold for you." I take holds for granted but many patrons have no idea their library cards give them access to books outside the building.
