Lionel brings up a great point: boys often hone in on a topic they love, such as soccer or robots or World War II aircraft. My sons would head straight for the shelf in the library that held collections on their favorite topic; the limit on their reading stemmed from exhausting the supply. Indeed, the dinosaur shelf was well stocked, but my sons had no interest there. Are boys reluctant readers because they can't find enough books they like? Children's book writers, editors and librarians are primarily women. Do they subconsciously write, publish and select books that are slanted to women's taste? Lee Sullivan Hill

Most boys are reading lots, and most of it is nonfiction. Yes, it may be about sport, sports stars, wars and war heroes, or about dinosaurs. And yes it may be in comics, magazines, or on specialist websites. But they are reading and, given good material, developing critical thinking, objectivity, and so on. I and my son have perfected the art of talking about all kinds of philosophical, political, and economic issues within the context of soccer. [This is a book idea waiting to be written.]
Perhaps not enough effort is being put into finding a range of nonfiction books that these readers will latch on to. Or encouraging authors to write "creative" nonfiction about sport and war. [There's lots on dinosaurs.] Or encouraging parents, teachers, and librarians to identify and give boys what they want. Do standard recommended reading lists include such books?
