Marc is correct: boys are often regarded as reluctant rather than selective readers, prompting misguided responses. I was one of those "reluctant reader" boys, and I have sired one such boy. We read all the time, starting with the sports pages of newspapers (print or online).
Most boys are reading lots, and most of it is nonfiction. Yes, it may be about sport, sports stars, wars and war heroes, or about dinosaurs. And yes it may be in comics, magazines, or on specialist websites. But they are reading and, given good material, developing critical thinking, objectivity, and so on. I and my son have perfected the art of talking about all kinds of philosophical, political, and economic issues within the context of soccer. [This is a book idea waiting to be written.]
Perhaps not enough effort is being put into finding a range of nonfiction books that these readers will latch on to. Or encouraging authors to write "creative" nonfiction about sport and war. [There's lots on dinosaurs.] Or encouraging parents, teachers, and librarians to identify and give boys what they want. Do standard recommended reading lists include such books?
