Whenever I read an especially fine book for children and/or teens, I try to think about who beyond my usual book community might want to know about it. I usually buy that special book for that person, or I buy more than one copy. I remember what KT and I heard Alexis De Veaux (An Enchanted Hair Tale) say while accepting a Coretta Scott King Book Award: "Buying a book is a political act." In Madison's wonderful local bookstore A Room of One's Own, I've bought Beyond Magenta for Winton, the senior minister of the progressive Protestant Christian congregation in which I'm active. I've also bought a copy for Lane, a UW-Madison sociology grad student who is facilitating a discussion group of trans kids connected with the Gay/Straight Alliance for Safe Schools (G/SAFE). I'm certain there are others in the wider community for whom I'll buy copies of Beyond Magenta, as well.
Peace,
Ginny
