Authentic autographs...or just meant to look that way?

Hi, All, I've been coming across some older books lately where it appears authors have autographed/personalized their books in a way that looks authentic. But I've been suspicious and haven't been able to find out if it's just the way the books have been printed, or if my library actually does have personalized copies.
I figured you all might know. My latest is Soup On Ice, by Robert Newton Peck. On the front page is a note that says: "To Loreen* [heart, musical note] RWPeck *the only gal I ever really loved." The reason I ask is because the black of the ink used is way more realistic and fades in and out in a different way from the letter a few pages in (the one from Soup and Rob). That one has black ink which is consistent and dark black the whole way. Do you have the book to check? And is there a way I would be able to figure this out in future? I haven't seen it in marc records (or don't know where to look).
Also, in the past, I've had library volunteers get really excited about my Shel Silverstein books, as they appear to be scribbled on as well. I've maintained that those scribbles are part of the published book...am I right?
