I am looking forward to reading both of these books, and sharing them with families and children. My experience with preschool and elementary students (as a volunteer and as school librarian, as well as mom) has shown me that there are many reasons children like to wear dresses, and the more that it's included in books and the media the better (much like William and his doll many years ago).

In addition to gender fluidity, sometimes a boy is aware of how much prettier the girls' clothes are, of how girls receive compliments (and positive attention) for clothing in a way that boys do not; often, sadly, for active young boys in a classroom much of the attention they get is negative, for behavior reasons; sometimes the dress-up clothes dress is easier to pull on over their own clothes and way more fun to twirl around in.

And yes, too, even now there are girls who want short hair and baseball caps and not allowed to have it. I was shocked by family friends (who are well educated and otherwise pretty liberal and accepting) who refused to cut their daughter's hair as she requested. (Which seems silly as it was very hard to manage and I'm sure in part she was tired of the snarls). There are also girls who really do want pretty princess outfits to the dismay of parents who try for more gender neutral clothing.

Childhood should be a time of imagination, exploration, discovery and acceptance, and how wonderful to have books that portray all that.

Thanks to the authors, illustrators and publishers for making sure these books are here!

All best, Jennifer Groff
