Here's how I read about Morris and the Tangerine Dress (haven't been able to get Jacob yet). What motivates Morris is primarily sensory appeal. the beautiful color that's especially meaningful to him,, the sound and the feel of the fabric, the contrasting sounds of the shoes, the pretty color on the fingertips.

In the past, men--those who could afford it--enjoyed wearing beautiful colors and fabrics in many societies and many centuries. But in the 19th century, this sensory enjoyment seems to have been, rather suddenly, prohibited for men. All part of Victorian prudery, I suppose.
Fortunately, color and nice fabrics for men made a return in the second half of the 20th century..

So I cheer for Morris and his determination to enjoy beautiful things, regardless of the meanings attached to them by other people.
