Re: Jacob, for now

I, too, was thrilled to see two wonderfully different books about this subject.

I keep thinking about the part of Jacob's New Dress that Megan discussed:/
/

/"That afternoon, Jacob asks his mom if she?ll help him make a real
dress. 'Mom didn't answer. The longer she didn't answer, the less
    Jacob could breathe.' " /

/I remember thinking, "Wow. " That line was so poignant and powerful
to me. It doesn't spell out what Jacob is thinking in that moment,
but his physical response speaks to the fact that he is aware of the
tension, as children so often are around any number of things, and
also of how important the answer she gives is to him.
    /

I remember feeling that tension and anxiety when I read that part of the book. Now, stepping back and reading Megan's impression, I think what an amazing opportunity this book offers to not only discuss difference and tolerance, but teach empathy to kids. Though kids may have different reactions to boys in dresses, or anything out of their ordinary expectations, I think most kids will be able to recognize that feeling of tension. I also think that there at least a few interpretations to what that feeling means to Jacob. Does he worry that he's doing something wrong? of not getting approval from his Mom? I think that can really open up a discussion about emotions, experiences, and others, and possibly get kids connecting their feelings and experiences with those of Jacob's.
