I was curious to see whether girls in pants in picture books are really so unusual, and I pulled a handful of books off my shelf to see. This is, of course, not a sample of anything much, but I found very few girls in dresses, and no frilly pink ones, among the illustrations of contemporary (and some historical) children.
A few examples: Barry Moser's illustrations of a girl in overalls (hard to tell she's a girl until the last picture shows her pigtails and a skirt in silhouette) in Patricia MacLachlan's WHAT YOU KNOW FIRST.
G. Brian Karas' girls, about half and half skirts and pants, in TODAY AND TODAY: Haiku by Issa.
Christopher Silas Neal's illustrations of the girl out skiing with her father in Kate Messner's OVER AND UNDER THE SNOW (somewhat reminiscent of Jane's OWL MOON, which she mentioned earlier). The girl is wearing pants, perhaps snowpants.
Georg Hallensleben's paintings of the girl in Kate Banks' AND IF THE MOON COULD TALK. A red barrette in her hair suggests that she's a girl, and she's wearing pants pajamas.
And these two girls in dresses seem to that flow with the landscape of the paintings: Claire Ewart's THE GIANT--the girl is active in farm work in her blue dress and brown cardigan. and the toddler in a soft pink dress on the cover of ALL THE PLACES TO LOVE (Patricia MacLachlan, with paintings by Mike Wimmer)
