I just leafed through our office copy of “Miss Brooks”—Mom is a short-haired illustrator/artist in paint-splattered overalls. As Chelsea says, I love that Mom is so caught up in her work that the house is a mess.
Although this appears to be geared toward slightly older readers, I’m wondering what people’s thoughts are on Shimura Takako’s Wandering Son series. I haven’t read this but see it on some recommended lists, as it deals with two children who both feel their assigned gender (one male, one female) does not reflect their true selves.

The book that jumps to mind for me is "Miss Brooks Loves Books (and I Don't)" which stars a little girl in a knit cap and overalls who needs the lure of a warty ogre costume to get her into reading. I believe her mom is also depicted in the illustrations with a tool belt, or maybe she's an artist? I just remember the two of them being wonderfully messy. There's so much to love in that book, and I especially appreciate that it depicts a non-girly girl but isn't about that. It's just about an enthusiastic librarian and a reluctant reader.
