Transgender and Gender Non-Conformity

The most recent book that I have read for elementary is Be Who You Are by Jennifer Carr. It is a very affirming book for students who may be dealing with the transgender experience and how the people around them may respond. For students who have not been in those shoes, it is one of those windows into someone else's experience and is written by the mother of a child who had this type of experience. She wrote the book that would have been helpful for her family at the time.

Another is 10,000 Dresses by Marcus Ewert. Betsy Bird reviewed it
*very*well here https://www.goodreads.com/review/show/47541463?book_show_action=false&page=1

The Boy in the Dress by David Walliams is another that is a chapter book written for a little older reader maybe 4th or 5th. It had a bit of an unbelievable ending, but overall was enjoyable and gave readers a look into how it can be to go up against cultural expectations.

Two that are less obvious and aren't as well-known are Rickshaw Girl by Mitali Perkins and Shoua and the Northern Lights Dragon (found here http://www.minnesotahumanities.org/reading). I bring them up simply because I read them both lately and the push against gender roles stood out to me. In Rickshaw Girl, the main character is talented, but is unable to have a certain job because "girls don't do that." In the other book, Shoua is denied things simply because she is a girl and must prove that gender should not be the determiner. As it has a dragon, it also reminds me of another favorite in this area The Paper Bag Princess by Robert Munsch.

I am J by Chris Beem is a teen book I picked up last year that was incredibly intense. J was a boy born with the body of a girl. J has been hiding out for years, but now is desperate to be seen as he sees himself. There are so many issues that I was completely unaware of and reading this book gave me a deeper understanding of the complexity of the transgender experience.
