It's time to launch May's discussion of *Transgender and Gender Non-Conformity in Books for Children and Teens*. If you haven't already done so, there's still plenty of time to read the following three titles before the second half of this month when they'll be the focus of discussion:
/ Beyond Magenta: Transgender Teens Speak Out /by Susan Kuklin (Candlewick Press, 2014)
/ Jacob's New Dress /by Sarah Hoffman and Ian Hoffman. Illustrated by Chris Case (Albert Whitman, 2014)
/ Morris Micklewhite and the Tangerine Dress /by Christine Baldacchino. Illustrated by Isabelle Malenfant
( A Groundwood Book / House of Anansi Press, 2014 )
Let's begin the month with your thoughts on the topic and relevant titles that you've appreciated. A book published over ten years ago that has stayed strong in my memory for its portrayal of a teen boy whose gender non-conformity is such an issue for some of his peers that they harass and humiliate him repeatedly over his public school career is *Stitches* by Glen Huser (Groundwood / Douglas & McIntyre, 2003). Travis has been the target of teasing since first grade. By the time he reaches junior high his interest in sewing, puppetry, and theater prompt some students to escalate their bullying from name-calling to acts of humilitation to eventual physical violence. Travis finds support in his best friend, Chantelle, and his Aunt Kitaleen, but nobody can truly act as a buffer between him and his tormentors. While his story is full of warmth, humor, and a hopeful outlook for his future, it never shies away from the harsh reality of bullying and violence. I appreciated the author's development of Travis as a complex individual who is so much more than any single aspect of his behavior or personality.
