We Need Diverse Books

Some of you are aware (I've seen your tweets!) that today is the launch of the We Need Diverse Books campaign. My post about it is here: http://americanindiansinchildrensliterature.blogspot.com/2014/04/we-need-diverse-books-that-arent.html -- where I include links to lists of books I recommend. The official site for the campaign is here: http://weneeddiversebooks.tumblr.com/post/83943947418/we-need-diverse-books-campaign

The campaign starts today with photos people submit to the official site (by email or the 'submit' button). There are activities on Friday and Saturday, too, and it looks like more long-term things are planned, too.

The campaign was launched as a response to the "blindingly white" and '4 dudes and a cat' kidlit panel that BookCon planners announced over the last month. Diverse is broad in scope, including sexual orientation, class, race... and some are emphasizing authorship in addition to characters in the book. The photos submitted yesterday from Oakland Public Library are outstanding. For those of you on Twitter, here's that photo: https://twitter.com/oaklibrary/status/461611386460581888/photo/1
