I wanted to take this opportunity to thank all of you who read and participated in both Helen's and my conversation with CCBC net. Poetry month is winding down, but I am hoping our discussion has sparked some ways to enjoy and celebrate this short, vivid, lyrical and ultimately celebratory method of expression. For those of you who interact with children on a daily basis, please consider writing poetry with them as well. One place to start is with Kenneth Koch's seminal book, ROSE, WHERE DID YOU GET THAT RED? but there are many other wonderful books out there
(as Helen mentioned). For more instant ideas, go to http://joycesidman.com/teachers/poetry-ideas/

Poetry--especially free verse, with its emphasis on word choice instead of rules--gives students a feeling of power. I have watched many a marginal student suddenly wake to the possibilities of language while writing poetry. It is a magical process. As Sam, a second grader, once said in his poem:

"Poetry is like a ship sailing the ocean of thoughts and the Poet is the one who sails it."

Warm wishes, Joyce
